How a Pandemic Changed My Retirement Plans — And My Career

Five years ago, I walked out of the NCUA for the last time.
Five years ago, I walked out of the NCUA for the last time.

The original plan? Retire, do some light consulting, and chase concerts and national parks across the country in our RV.

Then the world changed.

The pandemic upended those plans, and like many, I found myself rethinking everything. Instead of slowing down, I found a new purpose.

Here’s what unfolded over these five years:

→ Assisted credit unions representing 14% of industry assets

→ Launched two exam-related podcasts with 90,000+ downloads

→ Grew a consulting practice grounded in service and trust

→ and most importantly, became a proud grandfather, three times over

What started as a retirement pivot became a reinvention — and, unexpectedly, the most meaningful chapter of my career (so far).

Looking ahead, I’m filled with curiosity. The credit union world keeps evolving — and I’m thankful to still be part of the conversation.

If you're still in a boardroom like the one behind me in the photo, or one of my former NCUA colleagues who took advantage of the buyouts, know your next chapter might surprise you. Mine did.
