I have had the great honor and privilege to work with Executive Director Mark Treichel since I joined the NCUA Board in August 2014. I wish to thank you, Mark, for your much-valued assistance, keen sense of judgment, deft leadership, and compelling integrity over the years. You are hugely respected and much loved within the agency and that will serve as your enduring legacy.
When I think of Mark, I am reminded of a quote by Jim Rohn:
The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.
And, how could I possibly speak of Mark and not include a Dave Matthews lyrics ...

The coronavirus pandemic was just beginning when NCUA Executive Director Mark Treichel retired earlier this year, ruling out the possibility of a traditional retirement party befitting of a well-respected 33-year agency employee.
But sometimes, an unfortunate turn of events such as a pandemic can have a bright side.
“Retiring during COVID-19 made saying goodbye to my amazing staff different,” Treichel admitted. “But ironically, in some ways it created memories I would not otherwise have.”
In an effort to give Treichel a proper send-off despite the pandemic, NCUA staff got creative and made a virtual poster board for Treichel, where his peers could leave him well wishes. “I received so many nice messages from staff that really touched me in ways I did not expect and made me realize I may have had more of an impact than I ever imagined,” Treichel said. “The touching comments may never have made it to my ears without the timing of my departure.”

Before we conclude today's Board meeting, I'd like to make a statement. On behalf of the National Credit Union Administration, I would like to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to Executive Director, Mark Treichel for his 34 years of dedicated service to this agency, and congratulate him on his upcoming and I say well deserved retirement. Mark has been a tremendous asset to this agency and has made a measurable impact on credit unions throughout the country.
Since beginning his career at NCUA, he's held various positions, including Problem case officer, supervisory examiner, director of special actions, associate regional director, regional director and acting director of corporate credit unions. In each of these roles, he personified professionalism, leadership and dedication and support of the nation system of cooperative credit.

Thank you Mark for your more than three decades of service at the NCUA. For those who know Mark Treichel well, you can always count on him to identify the perfect quote for any occasion. In the coming months, Mark and his wife, Marie, plan to travel the United States in their new recreational vehicle. As such, I thought I should begin with a quote from Will Rogers, best known as America’s Cowboy Philosopher, who also traveled widely around our country. Rogers once wryly observed, “Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save.”
Mark, without question, you have had a long and distinguished career at the agency. You have also had the longest tenure of anyone in the Office of the Executive Director. That’s a testament to your outstanding policy, management and leadership skills. What is more, you served as the Executive Director under four different NCUA Chairmen.
